With all the Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) that have taken place over the last year there has been a lot of chaos with carrier migrations. The question on the table is how can companies better plan for these and avoid mishaps? We all know technology migrations are a part of business life, and are often a key way to remain competitive and fluid in their markets. As a result, customers around the world undergo hundreds of thousands of migrations occur each year. Migrations are done for a variety of reasons. Some of the more common one’s we see are:
What is often overlooked in the migration process is that they come with a unique set of challenges that can significantly impact budgets, completion time frames and cost. Most migrations happen on a sporadic basis. With all the telecom carrier M&As over the last couple years what we see is that OSS/BSS platforms have many deficiencies. These tend to typically show themselves most in meeting migration delivery needs in support that negatively impacts internal carrier groups. The fallout is that the project becomes unpredictable–not a good thing for a business! Carrier teams try to avoid the time and expense of migrations and try to place more focus on new product and services, which is not always in the best interest of the customer.
Most migrations are driven by a customer’s roadmap requirements in support of the company’s business and technical needs. A vital role we play for our customers is helping them strategically plan for these occurrences and build business cases that highlight unique migration challenges which are critical to the overall success of any project. We conduct workshops with key stakeholders to better understand the key business case considerations that will add visibility and assist in migration initiatives moving forward.
On a final note, we can’t stress enough how important it is to construct a business case to support any migration project.
